Hulu’s adult animated series Hit-Monkey centers on an assassin, who happens to also be a Japanese macaque. I wouldn’t be surprised if Matthew Mercer and the gang were inspired by this show. The Legend of Vox Machina specializes in a similar sarcastic humor and makes the most of its historic settings. An endlessly re-watchable comedy series that finishes with a heart-wrenching finale, Blackadder is a stone-cold classic. The cast members remain the same throughout and star Rowan Atkinson portrays the same, cowardly Blackadder in each season, yet the settings alter. One of the best British sitcoms of all time, Blackadderexplores British history through four distinct seasons and four different time periods. Made with the same love and attention, both of these comedy shows champion the nerdier side to pop culture, addressing friendships and rivalries with vigor. It’s a hilarious, geeky comedy series from the makers of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and co-star Rob McElhenney). Apple Original, Mythic Quest explores the office environment of those that make these types of video games into a reality. The Legend of Vox Machina plays a little like a video game, with enthralling fight sequences and many quests to be completed.
Heralded as one of the best video game adaptations of all time, Arcane may be a much more serious affair, but it is certainly worth your time. Showcasing dazzling animation through superb world-building, this is a show like no other. Set within the League of Legends fictional universe, the show focuses on sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), who are on either side of a growing conflict between the utopian city of Piltover and the undercity of Zaun. Netflix adult animated series Arcane was met with universal acclaim on its release in 2021. Comparisons are plenty, but House of the Dragon managed to re-energize a dawdling franchise in impressive style.

The HBO hit works as a prequel to the aforementioned TV titan, effortlessly ignoring that show’s best-forgotten final season, whilst working within the same world. If fantasy epics are your guilty pleasure, then look no further than Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon for more depraved, gory goodness. Both are set in the past, with comedic songs and a childish spirit that is pretty contagious. Like The Legend of Vox Machina, Horrible Histories revels in the bloody, violent history of war, finding immature hilarity in the downright disgusting. This highly successful franchise then made the leap onto the small screen, where it took on a life of its own. The series of kids’ books allowed children across the world to digest and enjoy history in a new and fresh way. Horrible Histories is a behemoth in the educational world. Wait, wait, wait, just hear me out on this one. If you enjoy this series, then of course Critical Role is worth seeking out too. It’s an inspirational tale really, a series that started with such humble beginnings, becoming the huge franchise that it is in the present day, with a second Prime Video series, Mighty Nein, also on the way.

The show brings together a team of professional voice actors, who play Dungeons & Dragons with hilarious results. The web series which The Legend of Vox Machina is based upon, launched back in 2015, quickly finding a home on Twitch and YouTube. When reviewing The Legend of Vox Machina back in early 2022, I had never even heard of Critical Role, but it is a web series with an almighty following regardless of my ignorance.
There are many parallels between both projects and fans of one should definitely check out the other, if they haven’t already. The series boasts an impressive voice cast, including Richard Armitage, Jason Isaacs, Bill Nighy, and Lance Reddick, who is also joining The Legend of Vox Machina voice cast in 2023. Castlevania is set in a fantasy world where the nation of Wallachia is attacked by Dracula himself and his ungodly army. This dark fantasy series from Netflix is also based on a piece of cult property and like The Legend of Vox Machina, both shows are exquisitely animated.
